The Textr E-Reader is a product of the German, Berlin based start-up company Textr GmbH and is available as of December 2009. The specifications for this Reader read quite impressive, while the design of the device might be able to overtake the Kindle in simplicity and wow-factor. Here are the specifics for the new Reader, which will be available in the German speaking part of Europe for a start, before probably being roled out to the rest of Europe and other markets.
It is reported that the Textr community will have over 1Mio books readily available for download by the user, including a lot of Public domain books for free.

The online portal txtr.com, various mobile connectivity options, and – of course – the txtr reader will form a unique combination of products that are designed to work flawlessly together.
1) Txtr.com is your central HQ for everything you want to read: Use it to store interesting documents, buy books at the online bookstore (coming soon), or discover free texts and articles in the ever-growing collection of available free documents.
2) You may then select the parts you would like to sync with the txtr reader – be it news feeds, your personal library or folders containing the documents you’re currently working on.
3) Have your texts automatically delivered to your txtr reader using the 3G mobile delivery service. It will keep your txtr.com account in sync with the reader at any time.
The Price for this E-Reader is reported to be around 320€, which is way above the Kindle and might be areason for people to stick with Amazon’s device, especially after the recent price drop for the standard Kindle.

I saw it at the cebit beginning of the year and I have to say this is an amazing piece of design. However, I don’t think they will be able to take on the Kindle, simply because the critical mass for available Ebooks is something Amazon can compete on without a near competitor in sight. If you take away the big library of readily availabel books any E-Reader is just a piece of technology without any added value. Amazon is just to big a player in the book market to be overtaken by anybody else, unless they would open their book store for other readers to be accessed, which will not happen for the simple reason that they would destroy their own business model with the Kindle.
BUT: Great piece of design and great usability, with the problem that the price is just to high to compete eye to eye with the Kindle.
